The Peabody Award winning Lucia's Letter describes one Guatemalan teenager's trip with a coyote from Guatemala through Mexico to southwest Florida. The story is a composite of several local Mayan women's experiences with human trafficking. It aired on on WGCU.
Actor Gene Wilder appeared on Gulf Coast Live on WGCU in 2007 as he was set to appear at the Sarasota Reading Festival. He joined me live by phone from his home in Connecticut for a discussion about life, acting and writing.
Blue Holes in the Gulf is the first video of offshore karst features in the Gulf of Mexico often called Blue Holes. As reporter, writer, producer and managing editor, I traveled 40 miles off Florida to explore the holes with a crew of technical divers who can go to depths of more than 200 feet.
Developer Wants Catholic Views to Rule in Florida Town
Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan is bankrolling the development of Ave Maria, a new town in southwest Florida being built around a Catholic law school of the same name. Monaghan wants the town to espouse conservative Catholic values — which means no access to contraceptives or abortion procedures. Amy Tardif of member station WGCU reports.
Faith & Bull Riding
One Saturday night a month, teenage boys gather near LaBelle to test their faith by riding bulls. The Bull Pit Outreach Ministries provides the animals. The boys bring the nerve. And several things nearly always happen: courage, fellowship, prayer and more than one kind of healing. Amy Tardif reports.
Frogs Help Researchers and Restoration
Researchers are collecting data and frog calls in the area known as the Picayune Strand Restoration Project. It’s the first Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project to begin construction. This unique effort uses amphibians to shed light on how well restoration is working and empowers project managers to make better decisions as restoration progresses. Amy Tardif has more on one researcher’s frog studies.
Melanoma on the Rise Among Young Women
A recent study cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 6000 cases of melanoma are estimated to be related to indoor tanning in the U.S. each year. This story looks at one group of people seeing a dramatic rise in the number of these cases. They’re young women and teens. And as Amy Tardif reports they’re the same group also going to tanning salons more often.
Services
Editing
From pitch to publication, I’ll work with your team or reporter to focus, write, and produce stories that sing for broadcast/podcasts and for digital. I can also present workshops on best practices for audio storytelling, including non-narrative audio.
Fact-Checking
The last look at your work should be a fact-check. I have a knack for gently demonstrating what’s wrong and then leading to the correct information. I look for balance and fairness, word choice, ethical lapses, organization, and missing logic, as well as checking every fact. I can also present a workshop on how to fact-check.
Voice Coaching
Even with a compelling script, poor delivery can cause a listener to disengage or lose interest. I’ll help you explore techniques for uncovering your voice’s unique dynamics and connecting with your audience authentically. Build confidence and ease in voicing for all formats. Available for individuals or groups.
